UMBILICAL HERNIA TREATMENT

There are two types of surgeries that are offered for patients suffering from umbilical hernias. Open umbilical hernia repair with mesh and the other most common type of surgery is Laparoscopic umbilical hernia repair with mesh. Broadly these surgeries based on the technique can be classified as OPEN SURGERY and MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY.

UMBILICAL HERNIA
It is a condition in which the intestine extends beyond or above the surface of the belly button (navel). In general, an umbilical hernia occurs when part of the bowel or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in the abdomen near the belly button. Umbilical hernias are common for infants and can occur in adulthood too. The umbilical hernia is typically harmless, but the risk associated with it can become incarcerated and can’t be pulled back into the abdominal cavity any longer.

UMBILICAL HERNIA SYMPTOMS
The major symptoms which are seen in most of the patients are:

  - Fever
  - Constipation
  - Severe abdominal pain
  - Vomiting and nausea
  - The bulge in the abdomen
  - Redness at the hernia site
  - When straining, lifting and coughing bulge near the belly button gets bigger.
  - Harsh pressure or pain at the hernia site
  - Abdominal pain with vomiting (in some cases)
  - Bloating or feeling of fullness

UMBILICAL HERNIA DIAGNOSIS
The diagnosis process for umbilical hernia is simple and fast as by a physical examination of bulge physicians can identify this. Doctors may suggest imaging and other tests in a few cases or complications.

  - Clinical exam by doctors or physician
  - Imaging studies (Ultrasound, Ct scan, X-ray)

UMBILICAL HERNIA RISK FACTOR INCLUDES:
  - Being overweight or obese
  - Lifting heavy objects or straining while moving
  - Excessive fluid in the abdominal cavity
  - Abdominal surgery
  - Heavy persistent cough
  - For women, frequent pregnancies
  - It may also occur when women give birth to twins, triplets, etc.

All these can be potential factors of this disorder and to prevent from this we need to avoid persistent coughs, and sneezing and maintain a healthy body weight. The other factor is to completely avoid heavy lifts beyond your capabilities.

LAPAROSCOPIC UMBILICAL HERNIA REPAIR
Umbilical hernia laparoscopic surgery is the most successful and common way to cure or treat umbilical hernia in adults and is usually divided into open surgery and umbilical hernia laparoscopic surgery.

In adults, laparoscopic umbilical hernia repair is a straightforward procedure that may be completed in 20-30 minutes as part of normal surgery by our hernia specialists.

OPEN SURGERY- OPEN UMBILICAL HERNIA REPAIR WITH MESH
This surgery involves open technique. Here an incision is made on the hernia site. The hernia sac is dissected and the contents are reduced or removed. The defect is identified and a mesh is placed as a sub-lay technique. The mesh is sutured and the defect is closed.

Open surgery is usually more painful than the minimally invasive surgeries. But there are various medications that we use to help you have better pain control.

For this surgery you may need a complete blood count (CBC), chemistry profile, PT, PTT. Depending on your medical history, we may require additional testing: chest X-Ray, EKG, medical clearance from your primary care physician, cardiac clearance from your cardiologist, additional blood work and finally Anesthesiology clearance.

We recommend that you have your blood work done before having the surgery performed. If this is not possible, please notify the surgical scheduling team at 8884200030.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY- LAPAROSCOPIC UMBILICAL HERNIA REPAIR WITH MESH
Laparoscopic surgery involves minimally invasive technique. Here we make small 5mm incisions on the side of the abdomen and small 10mm incision . The abdomen is entered and hernia is identified. The contents of the hernia is reduced and the defect closed if possible. A composite mesh is used for the hernia. The mesh is sutured or fixed to the abdominal wall. The surrounding structures are evaluated and the incision is closed.

Laparoscopic surgeries are usually less painful than the open surgeries. We still give you pain medications and nerve blocks so that you feel comfortable and are able to walk about six hours after the surgery.

For this surgery you may need a complete blood count (CBC), chemistry profile, PT, PTT. Depending on your medical history, your physician may require additional testing: chest X-Ray, EKG, medical clearance from your primary care physician, cardiac clearance from your cardiologist, additional blood work and finally Anesthesiology clearance.

We recommend that you have your blood work done before having the surgery performed. If this is not possible, please notify the surgical scheduling team at 8884200030.
